The Goucher College 4+1 B.A./M.A.T. curriculum provides an interdisciplinary approach that prepares students to pursue careers in education. This program prepares future teachers and education professionals to think about the classroom in various ways and is based on the assumption that, through a curriculum carefully balanced in theory and practice, participants can acquire the knowledge and skills needed for teaching general and/or special education students.

This program will help develop future teachers who think critically, solve complex problems, and pursue social justice issues related to education. Students within the program will develop the skills to meet the standards and criteria set forth by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Program Curriculum

Students within this program will complete education studies major with a teaching and learning thematic core at the undergraduate level. This major includes 12 graduate education credits that count towards both the B.A. and M.A.T. degrees.

Once a student has completed the B.A. degree, they will matriculate fully into the graduate program to complete the remaining curriculum requirements for the M.A.T. degree.

Note: this has potential financial aid implications. For more information, read below or contact finaid@zo23.com.

Undergraduate students interested in pursuing this dual degree option are eligible to begin taking graduate courses during the first semester of their junior year and can take up to 12 graduate education program credits that will count towards both their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Once the student has reached the 12-credit limit, they will only be able to take graduate courses towards program completion after they have completed their undergraduate degree.

Application Process

Current Goucher undergraduate students interested in pursuing a B.A./M.A.T. 4+1 program need to complete the dual degree application.

Once the application has been completed, the graduate admissions office will review the application and inform the applicant of the decision and appropriate next steps. Application review will be conducted within 3-5 business days.

We encourage interested undergraduate students to apply during the second semester of their sophomore year. As part of the application process, students will need an endorsement from their undergraduate education advisor.

Note: undergraduate students will need to apply and be accepted before they can take a graduate education course.
