Program Goals for French Transnational Studies Major
Oral skills in French that allow them to communicate accurately and with nuance in
a range of settings from informal to professional, including study abroad and an internship,
but also at on-campus events.
Literacy skills that allow them to understand authentic French-language media, including
film and literary texts, as well as newspapers and formal academic writing, and the
ability to bring an interdisciplinary approach to bear on objects of study.
Analytic skills that allow them to interpret accurately and with nuance French-language
media, including film and literary texts, as well as newspapers and formal academic
writing. This includes the ability to evaluate cultural and historical contexts and
understand their relationship to literature and other cultural productions.
Intercultural knowledge and skills that allow them to negotiate social exchanges in
French-speaking immersion settings abroad, and to situate the singularity of French
and Francophone cultures as well as their own culture in a broader context.
Knowledge of how the methods of literary, cinematic, and social and historical analysis
can be drawn on to yield insights about contemporary French and francophone cultures,
including transnational phenomena extending beyond the francophone world.
